In October, Hawaiian Humane Society presented a community event featuring Phil Arkow, an internationally acclaimed expert on the link between animal cruelty and violence among people. Arkow spoke in depth about the correlation between animal abuse and domestic violence, child abuse and elder abuse.

Animal cruelty is often just the tip of the iceberg, said Arkow, who cited statistics that 41 percent of those who abuse people were found to have a history of animal abuse. The national statistics shared during the presentation illustrated the intrinsic value of animals and interconnectedness of crime and how animal abuse should not be addressed in isolation.

The incidence of animal abuse was found in 88 percent of homes with child abuse. Children who had been exposed to domestic violence were reported to be three times more likely to be cruel to animals. Arkow also urges policy makers and those who set human services issues as a higher priority than animal issues to take note that the role of pets in family life has changed dramatically over the last 50 years.

More children are growing up with pets than live-in fathers. Ninety-nine percent of all pet owners today. The role of animals in families has never been more important and pivotal to the family dynamic. Thanks in part to renewed interest in how animal abuse is linked to human violence, legislators are more receptive to animal welfare legislation.

The more inclusive term Oceania , in its broadest definition, encompasses all the foregoing; however, the term is used less strictly in this article to refer to the Pacific Islands as defined above. The Pacific Island region covers more than , square miles , square km of land—of which New Zealand and the island of New Guinea make up approximately nine-tenths—and millions of square miles of ocean.

It is a mixture of independent states, associated states, integral parts of non-Pacific Island countries, and dependent states. The main Pacific Islands span the Equator obliquely from northwest to southeast and can be divided into two major physiographic regions by island type: continental and oceanic.

The Hawaii Cat Cafe at Kapahulu has a new partnership with the Hawaiian Humane Society, with felines roaming in the lounge now up for adoption. It became official on Monday, according to Hawaii Cat Cafe owner Cindy Washburn, and about 25 felines are ready to mingle with visitors while looking for new homes. They come in all different colors, and range from kittens less than a year old to Mr. Cat, who is Washburn said when the Hawaii Cat Cafe opened in October of last year as the first brick-and-mortar venture combining cats, coffee and pastries, she worked the many different organizations, including the Oahu SPCA, and will continue to work with small groups.

To date, she said the cafe has seen more than cats adopted. The partnership has already resulted in an adoption. Earlier this week, cafe visitor Patricia Hashley adopted 9-month-old Harriet. Hashley had just lost her own year-old cat, according to Washburn. Harriet went right up to Hashley, rubbed up against her legs and they had an instant bond.

The Hawaiian Humane Society , meanwhile, is getting an influx of kittens earlier than usual, according to events manager Suzy Tam.

One of the results was inconclusive, but 11 showed mutt combinations that the facility had never seen before. The tested dogs were all placed within two weeks — twice as fast as any 11 untested small, brown dogs in the previous months.

Twelve more dogs were tested, and once the last few in that group are placed, 24 more dogs will find out their breed backgrounds, Delucchi said. In the two batches of tests, only 10 of 23 dogs had no Chihuahua in them. Chihuahuas took over from the glut of pit bull mixes that dominated the shelter until five or six years ago, Delucchi said.
